What would you say to winning money for losing weight? It sounds too good to be true, but an innovative social weight loss game, DietBet, makes it possible.
We all struggle for motivation at times. While friends and family may try and hold you accountable for your actions, staying on track is often easier said than done. At the end of the day, you’re accountable for your own weight loss. While you can get plenty of help from a personal trainer or group exercise instructors, you will only lose weight if you’ve fully committed yourself. Sometimes, you just need an extra incentive to maintain your progress.
DietBet is an American weight loss game where you bet on yourself to lose weight. It doesn’t tell you how to lose weight, or sell any weight-loss products, the aim of the game is solely to encourage you to achieve your goal.
Here at DW Fitness, we want to support as many people as possible on their weight loss journey. That’s why we are the first UK gym to team up with DietBet, as we host five of our own games over the next six months.
How does DietBet work?
● Choose a game
● Bet your own money
● Lose agreed amount of weight
● Get your money back plus more
The concept is simple. You bet your own money, which goes into a communal pot, and if you lose a certain amount of weight you will get your stake back plus a share of the stake put in by everyone who hasn’t managed to lose the weight. Therefore, if you don’t lose the amount of weight agreed you will automatically lose your money and it will be shared out between the winners.
In order to promote healthy weight loss, users must submit official weigh-in photos of themselves standing on the scales at the beginning and the end of the game. The two photos will clearly show the player stood on the scales, plus a close-up photo of their weight, so the DietBet team can verify real weight loss.
While you should be accountable for yourself, having the right support from others can make a huge impact on your journey. Each DietBet game has its own community of people who are also following the same fitness path, you can motivate and inspire each other by reading and writing recipes and sharing photos and stories of encouragement.
Kick-start your weight loss
Our first four-week kick-starter game will launch on the 6th September, then three other month-long games will commence. These are followed by a six-month transformation game, which will commence from the 16th September. Instead of keeping the profits that game creators normally receive, DW will donate all of its organiser fee to a charity voted for by the DW DietBet game players, so keep visiting our blog for updates on how and when you can cast your vote.
As well as playing along online, we want to inspire members offline too. We will be hosting official weigh-ins hosted at local DW gyms so that we can work together and break a new weight loss record by being the first gym in the country to lose a huge combined weight.
Matt Daniel, Health and Fitness Executive at WayBetter - the company behind DietBet - commented on the partnership: "The WayBetter team is super excited to partner with DW Fitness Clubs as they host a series of DietBet online weight loss challenges for their fitness-minded community of members and guests.
“Based on over 280,000 players having completed a Dietbet since launching in 2013, we've learned that people genuinely enjoy the motivation, accountability, collaborative support and financial incentives built into our DietBet challenges. DietBetters have collectively lost over 3 million pounds (215,000 stone) and we've paid out over US$13 million (£8.5 million) to winners.
“Additionally, DW Fitness is adding a fun charitable component to help raise money for a worthy cause that will be voted on by its members.”
Be sure to visit DietBet’s website to get a feel for the games before you sign up. The one-month kickstarter games, which you can find here, will involve a $25 bet (£16) and the six-month transformation game, which you can find here, has a $16 stake every month (£10), so these amounts aren’t so high that you will lose your life savings, but they are large enough sums to keep you focused. The question is can you put your money where your mouth is?
The financial aspect of staying fit is something that we’ve covered extensively on our blog of late, including this infographic on how to maintain a healthy, balanced diet without breaking the bank. Of course, sticking to a good diet is only half of the battle - you’ll need to exercise too! Why not sign up for a membership at DW Fitness Clubs, and we can discuss the best ways to help you get the body that you want.
