International Women’s Day: DW Girls Can, can you?

March 02 2015

Can you feel the rush of empowerment flooding through gyms across the country? That’s right, women everywhere are realising that they can look fitness in the face and shout “I can!”.

On March 8th we will be celebrating International Women’s Day, a day to mark all of the achievements of women throughout the world. While the event has a positive feel, it also encourages people to think about the need for greater equality as it is an issue which still affects many aspects of our daily lives, especially when it comes to exercising.

Unfortunately, the fear of being judged while exercising is still stopping many women from taking part and working out. One campaign which really speaks to us here at DW Fitness Clubs is ‘This Girl Can’ scheme, a national Sport England campaign which aims to inspire women to not care about how they might be perceived and get stuck into exercise. This Girl Can celebrates women all over the country that aren’t afraid of exercise and encourages others to be more active, get sweaty and prove to everyone that they can do it too.

Make it happen

The theme for International Women’s Day 2015 is Make It Happen, which clearly supports the same ideals as the This Girl Can campaign. Our infographic revealed that only 20% of women stick to their New Year’s fitness resolutions, compared to 25% of men. While we’d hope that the figures would be higher for both sexes, there is no reason why one should differ from the other - this is something that needs to change.

The key thing is to stay motivated and think of the bigger picture. Of course, exercise can help you to lose weight but more importantly it helps you to maintain a healthy body and lifestyle. As one of the slogans of the This Girl Can campaign states, “I swim because I love my body, not because I hate it.”.

Be your own role model

Women have been high achievers in the sporting industry for many years, with professional athletes such as Jessica Ennis-Hill and Rebecca Adlington winning gold medals for Britain along with gaining prestigious awards from the Queen.

Although these women are fantastic role models, it is easy to put them on a pedestal and feel distanced from them. This shouldn’t be the case, as women everywhere should be inspired by the achievements of not only professional athletes but the other women around them. Show support for your fellow women by storming into the weights room and show people that you aren’t afraid to lift weights, run long distances on the treadmill or dance like no one’s watching in a Zumba class!

Whether you are aiming to beat your personal best in the gym, or smash your distance on the field, we’d love you to share your victories with DW Fitness Clubs by using the #FitnessRevolution hashtag. Simply add it to your posts and share your achievements via social media so we can encourage other women to get involved and prove that DW girls certainly can!
