What is Karate?

Karate is a martial art developed in Japan and formed under the influence of Kung Fu. With over 50 million practitioners worldwide, Karate can be practised as an art, combat sport or as a method of self-defence. Enjoyed both by those with a passing interest and those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the martial art, Karate training focuses on perseverance, fearlessness and virtue.

What are the benefits of Karate?

Physically, Karate helps to improve your flexibility, strengthen your muscles and sharpen your reflexes. However, you’ll also find that Karate is also a fantastic way to learn self-discipline and boost your confidence. It's a fun group activity, too!

What can I expect from a Karate class?

The first thing you’ll learn in a Karate class is proper etiquette. You’ll be taught how to appropriately interact with your instructor and fellow students. Then, you’ll learn basic exercises and stretches to warm up before being introduced to traditional Karate stances and techniques. As you continue to attend more and more classes, you’ll learn more advanced techniques, including kicks, strikes and grapples.

How many calories can you burn in a Karate class?

The number of calories you burn in a Karate class depends on how intense your training is and how much effort you’re putting in. Typically, however, a Karate class can burn 500—800 calories an hour.

Do I need to have experience?

No. Despite there being a lot to learn, it will take a lot of practice before you’ll master Karate techniques. From your first class, your instructor will take you through the very basics and train you from the ground up, so you don’t need a blackbelt to get involved.
